The DAR Good Citizens program was established over 75 years ago. This program honors senior high school students who exemplify the Good Citizen qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. This year 105 chapters contacted 678 high school in Illinois and 545 good citizens were chosen. Of these, 484 participated in the essay/scholarship portion of the program. The Illinois state DAR is divided into seven districts, and each district selects one winner from the pool of chapter winners. From these seven district winners, a state winner is chosen.
The Good Citizens are judged on academics, personal life, community involvement, and the written essay. Entries are judged 70% on the personal accomplishments and 30% on the written essay. Each year the written essay is entitled "Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It." This year’s sub-topic was "What is the Greatest Challenge We Face in America Today." Each essay is hand written in a classroom setting under supervision with a time limit of two hours. Princeton High School students and staff would like to congratulation Amanda Morrow on her fine accomplishment.
