The PHS Journalism students try to wake up after their arrival at state.

PHS Journalism Team Competes at State

April 28, 2008

Princeton High School competed at the IHSA State Journalism competition on April 26th. The event was held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston Illinois. Representing PHS were Juniors Alyssa Donner and Carolyn Kurth. The duo competed in Yearbook Theme Development. This is an event where given a prompt, the team must develop a front and back cover and title page for a year book reflecting the theme given. Sophomore Mandi Morrow participated in News Writing. In News Writing, students are given a fact sheet on a news event and are able to create a news story from that information. Freshman Molly Barron participated in Editorial Writing. In this category, a student is given a controversial issue and asked to write an opinion news story which would reflect a student newspaper's opinion on the issue. Freshman Cyle Dickens competed in Infographics. This category is done on computer in either Adobe InDesign or Adobe Photoshop. Students must take information from a news story prompt and create a graphic that reflects this information in a fun and creative way. These students as well as the rest of the team have been practicing for six weeks to perfect their skills.

Each year IHSA provides journalism competition at the Sectional and State level. This was the third year of journalism competition in the State of Illinois. Princeton has sent students each year of the last two that they have competed. In 2007, PHS placed 7th overall in Sectionals, (which they hosted). In 2008, PHS placed 5th at Sectional competition. The team is coached by Mrs. Dixie Schroeder
